Santoni's work is fundamentally a conceptual and political project. The radical reduction of form in this series also evokes the existential landscapes of artists such as Barnett Newman and the chromatic rigor of Josef Albers, where color and line alone carry the weight of meaning.
The emotion these works provoke is one of palpable isolation and anxiety. The austerity of the landscape, devoid of all human or natural life, generates a sense of profound loneliness. The serene, almost clinical surfaces of the paintings contrast with the unsettling narratives they suggest. The "submersion" pieces, with their flood lines, are particularly striking, depicting a world where the sea has reclaimed the land, leaving only a single dwelling, but still standing. There is a silent tragedy here, a silent narrative about climate change and environmental degradation, all the more powerful for its lack of overt drama.
He doesn't just paint a place; he paints a question, a warning, and a critical reflection on our present moment. His work testifies to the power of a single image to express the anxieties of an entire generation.
